What you will learn
Every drummer starts somewhere, and each lesson is paced to the student. As a guide, here is how a drumming journey usually unfolds with weekly lessons.
- Beginner. Holding the sticks, a steady beat, your first rock grooves, and reading basic drum notation.
- Intermediate. Coordination across both hands and feet, fills and rolls, dynamics, and playing in time with songs you love.
- Advanced. Grooves across rock, funk, jazz and more, four-way independence, and exam or band performance preparation.
Private or group
Most drummers learn one-on-one, where the whole lesson is shaped around your pace, your goals and the music you want to play. Private lessons run for 30 minutes weekly, with longer lessons available on request.
Group lessons are a fun, more affordable way to start, and they suit friends or siblings learning side by side. Tell us what works for your family and we will match you with the right instructor.
Drums and bass, the rhythm section
Drums are the engine room of any band, and they pair naturally with bass to form the rhythm section. Learning to lock in with another player is one of the most rewarding parts of drumming, and a skill bands always need.
If your drummer is keen to play with others, ask us about bass lessons as well. The two instruments are made for each other.
Drum lessons with caring, independent instructors
Instructors who really play
The instructors who teach at Narellan Music Centre are independent professionals and working drummers, chosen for their musicianship and their teaching, each holding a current Working With Children Check, which we verify.
No kit at home? No problem
You do not need a full drum kit to begin. A practice pad or an electronic kit is perfect for early lessons and home practice, and an electronic kit with headphones keeps the noise down for the whole house.
Local and independent
We are a local music school in the heart of Narellan, with air-conditioned rooms and on-site parking. Private lessons are from $49 for 30 minutes, with a trial lesson to start, and your fees go back into the music.
Drum lesson questions, answered
What age can my child start drum lessons?
Most children are ready for the drum kit from around age 6, once they can sit at the kit and follow a short lesson. Drums suit energetic kids and teens especially well, and if your child is younger we are happy to talk through the best way to start, including our lessons for kids.
Do we need a drum kit at home to start?
Not for the first lesson. To build a practice habit a drum pad or an electronic kit at home makes a real difference, and we are happy to recommend an affordable starter setup before you spend much. A full acoustic kit is lovely but not needed to begin.
Will drums be too loud at home?
They do not have to be. Practice pads are quiet, and electronic kits can be played with headphones so the rest of the house hears nothing. Acoustic kits are louder, so many families begin on a pad or an electronic kit and upgrade later if they want to.
Do you prepare students for drum exams?
Yes. For students who want a goal, the instructors here prepare AMEB and Rockschool drum grades, covering technique, reading, and set pieces. Plenty of students never sit an exam and simply play for the joy of it, which is just as welcome.
Can my child play drums in a band?
Absolutely. Drums are the heartbeat of any band, and they lock in with bass to form the rhythm section. Many students go on to jam with friends, and if yours is keen on playing together, ask us about bass lessons too.
