What music gives a teenager
The teenage years are full and fast. Learning an instrument gives a young person something steadying that is genuinely their own. Here is what we see music do for the teens who learn here.
- A creative outlet. School can be a pressure cooker. One hour a week that is purely theirs, making something that honestly sounds good, is a real release.
- Confidence and identity. Choosing an instrument and visibly getting better at it builds a quiet self-belief that carries into school, friendships and the rest of life.
- A goal that is theirs. Nailing a song, joining a band or working towards a graded exam gives a teenager something real to aim at that belongs to them alone.
Instruments that suit teenagers
Most teenagers gravitate to the instruments behind the music they already love. Any of these is a great place to start, and you can change your mind once you begin.
Guitar
The teenage staple. Acoustic or electric, from first chords to full songs.
Drums
Loud, physical and a brilliant release. The heartbeat of any band.
Bass
The glue that holds a band together. Quick to start, deeply satisfying.
Singing
Build range, control and the confidence to use their own voice.
Piano
A complete foundation in music, from chords to full pieces.

Form a band, play with friends
Guitar, bass, drums and a voice: put them together and you have a band. A lot of teenagers come to music because they want to play with their friends, not only on their own. Learning at the same Narellan studio means the skills, and the people, are in one place.
Not every teenager wants to be a rock star, and that is completely fine. What matters is that each player can hold their part and has the confidence to play out loud. Ask us about ways for students to play together.
The makings of a band
- Guitar and bass to carry the riffs and lock in the groove.
- Drums to keep everyone honest and in time.
- A singer with the confidence to front a song.
A clear goal: AMEB and Rockschool
For teenagers who like something to aim at, the independent instructors here prepare both AMEB and Rockschool grades. Rockschool is built around contemporary and rock styles, so it lines up neatly with the music many teens already want to play. Grades cover repertoire, technique and theory, and mark real, recognised progress.
Plenty of teens never sit an exam, and that is completely fine. Some simply want to play the songs they love, and lessons flex to whatever keeps them motivated.
Lessons that fit around school
School, sport, homework and a social life already fill a teenager's week, so lessons stay weekly and a manageable 30 minutes, with longer lessons available on request. The aim is steady progress that does not add to the stress.
Short and regular beats long and rare, so ten to fifteen minutes of practice on most days does more than a single cram the night before. We will find a weekly time that works around the school timetable.

Teen lesson questions, answered
What age are teen music lessons for?
Teen lessons suit roughly ages 12 to 17. Younger children are better matched to lessons for kids or our Mini Musos early-childhood classes, and adults have their own pathway. Every lesson is shaped around the individual, so age is a guide rather than a strict rule.
My teenager has never played. Is it too late to start?
Not at all. Plenty of teens begin as complete beginners, and high school is a very common and excellent time to start. Lessons begin from the very first note, at a pace that suits them, with no assumption of any earlier musical experience.
Can my teen learn the contemporary and rock music they listen to?
Yes, and we encourage it. The surest way to keep a teenager practising is to let them play music they love. Instructors weave current songs, riffs and styles into the core skills of technique, timing and reading.
How do lessons fit around school and homework?
Lessons are a weekly 30 minutes, so the time commitment stays realistic even in a busy term. A short daily habit of ten to fifteen minutes of practice does more than one long session, and it slots around homework far more easily.
Does my teen have to sit music exams?
No. Exams are completely optional. AMEB and Rockschool grades are there for teens who want a clear goal, but many students simply learn for enjoyment and never sit one. Both paths are genuinely fine.
